Frequently asked questions

  • Who do you treat?

Babies, toddlers, nursery or infant school children, teenagers and young adults up to and including the age of 25, with support for their parents, where appropriate.

  • How long will the therapy last?

This will depend on the age of your child or young person and the type and severity of their presenting difficulties.

There will be an initial ‘parent(s) only’ session for parents of children and teenagers aged up to and including 17. Young people aged 18-25 will usually attend on their own.

Work with babies, toddlers and children aged under five and their parents will usually last for six sessions in the first instance, with the option of a further six sessions, if necessary.

For children and teenagers aged 5-17, there will be a 4-6 session assessment following the initial parent(s) only session(s), to see if this way of working is likely to be helpful, and then work might be short-term (six sessions), medium-term (10-12 sessions), or long-term (1 year+), depending on the nature of the difficulties.

For young people aged 18-25, there might be a short series of 4-5 sessions where difficulties are not severe, or assessment and longer-term work, where difficulties are more entrenched.

We can discuss your own specific needs and decide the appropriate length of therapy at the initial parent(s) only session(s) and/or at the end of the assessment phase.

Toys and drawing materials, where appropriate, will be provided for your child’s use during their therapy.

  • How often will the therapy be?

The therapy sessions will take place once weekly, in most instances. Parent work sessions, where appropriate, will take place at a frequency to be agreed, but a regular six monthly review will always be held where children and teenagers are aged 5-17.

  • How long will each therapy session be?

Following the initial 15-minute phone discussion, all sessions will last 45 minutes.

  • How much will it cost?

Following the initial 15-minute phone discussion, which is free, all sessions will cost £80 per session.

For babies, toddlers, and children aged under five, session fees will include a letter summarising the presenting problems and session outcomes, sent to you as parent(s) on completion of the work, with a copy also sent to your child’s GP.

For children and teenagers aged 5-17, assessment session fees will include a letter summarising the presenting problems and assessment outcomes, sent to your child or teenager's GP on completion of the assessment, and with a copy sent to you as a parent(s).

The six monthly parent review session...' and penultimate para please amend 'Termly update letters' to 'Six monthly update letters...

Where an initial assessment does not lead to ongoing work, a GP letter will be sent to you as parent(s), for you to forward to the GP should you wish, unless there are issues of risk, when the GP will be informed as a matter of course.

For young people aged 18-25, the session fees will include a letter summarising the work completed or, where difficulties are more entrenched, the presenting problems and assessment outcomes, sent to the young person’s GP, with a copy sent to the young person.

Termly update letters will be sent to the young person’s GP, with a copy sent to the young person.

For the 18-25 year age group, letters will not be sent to the parent(s) unless the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist deems there to be exceptional circumstances.

  • Where will the therapy be?

Sessions are held in comfortable consulting rooms at Chipping Norton Health Centre.

  • When can I make an appointment to see you?

Appointments take place on Fridays, depending on availability.

  • Can you give my child a diagnosis?

Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists do not provide formal diagnoses, but I will usually be able to advise you on appropriate services you might want to contact, should this be necessary.

  • How do I arrange treatment with you?

Once you’ve made telephone or email contact and we have had a no cost, 15-minute phone discussion, if your child or teenager is aged 0-17, I will arrange an initial assessment session if appropriate, which will be for you as parent(s) only.

This initial assessment session will give you the opportunity to tell me more about your concerns. We can discuss what Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy might entail, and whether your child or teenager might benefit from it.

If your young person is aged 18-25, then once you have made telephone or email contact and we have had a no cost, 15-minute phone discussion, I will make an appointment which will be for the young person only.

In the spirit of honesty and transparency, I’ll tell you if I don’t think I can help. If that’s the case, I’ll try to offer advice as to what you might want to do next.
